In an arrangement for the programmed control of the cultivation of a plant in a culture space or chamber an experimental plant is first grown under natural conditions and the time variations of the factors affecting growth entered in a chart. The recorded factors include the temperatures of the air and culture medium, atmospheric humidity, wind velocity, insulation, pH value, rainfall and growth. A record experimental of controlled growth is then conducted with the growth-impeding factors modified and a record chart obtained. Further growth periods are established in a similar way to derive an optimum vegetation or growth chart which is then programmed on a punched card. The punched card is employed to electrically control appliances for bringing about particular climatic conditions in a culture chamber in order to conduct plant culture on an industrial scale. It is stated that special greenhouse installations may be employed in which the culture chambers are arranged on the paternoster or endless chain principle in high towers united to form large building units. Separate culture chambers, each programme controlled by punched cards, can be employed for sections of the growth cycle, arrangements being provided between each two chambers for transferring culture vessels or containers from one to the other chamber.
