935,580. Packaging machines; making paper bags. FR. HESSER, MASCHINENFABRIK A.G. April 2, 1962 [April 2, 1961], No. 12520/62. Classes 94(1) and 94(2). Blanks separated from a web 1, Fig. 1, are pushed by a folder 15 which effects a V- or W-bottom fold, into grippers 12 on a vertical intermittently-rotating wheel 10 from which, possibly after further operations, they are delivered to an intermittently rotating horizontal wheel 30 by which they are carried during filling. The machine illustrated can be readily modified to produce bags of different forms. Folding guides 22 and welding jaws 23, 24 adjacent the wheel 10 can be readily replaced, and folding guides 45 operating on the web may form it to a simple tube, to produce a bag with two compartments, as in Fig. 6, or may fold it to the section shown in Fig. 2 to produce the bag shown in Fig. 5. The bags may be heatsealed, or a device 50 may apply to the web a strip of glue derived by heating a glue thread 51. The folder 15 shown has two blades 16, 17, Fig. 4, co-operating with a blade 18 on each gripper 12 to produce a W-bottom fold. Each gripper includes pivoted shoes 19 biased by blade springs 20. The web 1 is fed by constantly rotating rollers 5, 6 and intermittently rotating rollers 7, 8 separated by a pulley 9 serving to take up the slack in the web. The blanks are cut off by knives 13, 14. The bags may be delivered to the wheel 30 by a vertical wheel 26, but this may be omitted. The bags, which may be infusion bags, are filled from funnels 35 moving in synchronism with the bags and lowered into engagement with them adjacent a hopper 32 feeding measured quantities. After they have been closed by a device 33 the bags are delivered to a wheel 36 where they receive a label 37 attached by a thread 38. They are then stacked in predetermined numbers in the compartments of a wheel 41.
