A nut assembly 12 of a worm gear screw jack supports a jack screw 14 and comprises two sections 30, 32, which, when their threads wear, may be moved closer to each other to clamp the sections into firm engagement with the thread of the screw 14 to reduce backlash therebetween. The nut sections are connected by pins 33 located within aligned apertures. A tube 20 and cap 24 protect the lower portion of the screw 14 which is prevented from rotation, e.g. by attachment of a pad 18 with a load. When the jack is initially assembled, there is a gap between the bottom surface of a bearing cap flange 50 and the top surface of a main housing 10, and lock screws 52 are tightened on the housing. When backlash becomes apparent, the lock screws are loosened and the cap 16 is screwed down, thus causing a thrust bearing 34 and the nut section 30 to move downwardly. With the backlash taken up the lock screws 52 are retightened.
