In expanding wheel gearing having twin conical toothed discs engaged by a transverse sliding segment chain 4, the teeth of the discs have flanks 6 at less than 50 degrees to the plane of the tooth roots and the crests 3 of one set of teeth are axially opposite the roots 2 of the other set. The length of the crests 3 is greater than the length of the roots 2 to induce jamming and frictional engagement between the teeth and the sliding segments 5. The flank angle is preferably between 20 degrees and 45 degrees and the root width may be zero.
