A lubricating oil composition comprises an oil of lubricating viscosity, from 0.1% to 80% by weight of a polyolefin substituted succinimide of tetraethylene pentamine of the formula FORM:0987142/C3/1 wherein R is derived from a polymer RH of an olefin containing from 2 to 5 carbon atoms, said polymer containing from 30 to 200 carbon atoms, and from 5 to 35 mM/Kg. of the composition of a metal dithiophosphate of the formula FORM:0987142/C3/2 wherein R and R1 are alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl hydrocarbon radicals containing a total of from 7 to 50 carbon atoms and M is a divalent metal, the succinimide-dithiophosphate mol. ratio being in the range of from 1 : 10 to 6 : 1. The preferred polyolefin for preparing the substituted succinimide is a polyisobutene of molecular weight about 1000 and the preferred dithiophosphate is the zinc salt of a di-(alkylphenyl) dithiophosphate wherein the alkyl radicals are derived from propylene polymers of 12 to 14 carbon atoms. Very many other examples are given. The base oil may be petroleum (naphthenic, paraffinic or mixed), an oil from coal, or a synthetic oil such as an alkylene oxide polymer, a dicarboxylic acid ester, an ester of an acid of phosphorus, an alkyl or dialkyl benzene, a polyphenyl, an alkyl biphenyl ether or a silicon compound such as a silicate or siloxane; numerous examples are given of most of these classes.
