Cylinders 9, 10 which engage the belt 4 of an endless conveyer are longitudinally movable by a pair of endless chains attached to the bearings which carry the shafts supporting the cylinders 9, 10. A transverse beam connects rods 27 which are secured to bearings 14B supporting the shafts of the cylinder 10. An hydraulic actuator 29 is connected to the transverse beam and applies a constant tension to the belt 4. If the length of the belt increases, the cylinder 10 is moved to the right as shown in the drawing and simultaneously, via the endless chains, the cylinder 9 is moved to the left.
