Apparatus whereby the intensity of the stroke in a jigging machine may be adjusted according to the depth of a layer of feed material as measured by a float device 13 close to the positions at which the material reaches the jigging screen. The float position 2 regulates magnetic switches 4 and 6 in the control circuit 7, 8 of the stroke producing device B. The float may move according to the depth of material close to the feed-position on the jig-bed or in a delivery shoot thereto (not shown). The circuit 7, 8 controls an air-supply by way of a throttle 9. The control mechanism may be hydraulic, mechanical or pneumatic instead of electromagnetic (as shown). The control element 7 may include devices for varying the timing of the stroke.
