998,295. Catalytic igniters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 19, 1963 [Nov. 21, 1962], No. 45593/63. Heading F4F. A catalytic igniter for the afterburner of a jet engine comprises a perforated metering disc 40 dynamically loaded on to a platinum pad 36 by the force of the gas stream in the exhaust duct of the engine. The pad and metering disc are contained in a cylindrical holder 24 which abuts a shoulder 22 in a sleeve 21 attached to a flame stabilizer. Wire clips 48 pass through holes in the holder 24 and are bent over at their ends to loosely retain the pad and the metering disc. Cooling gas flows along the annular passage 42 between the holder and the sleeve and then through diverging passages 44 in the downstream end of the holder. The platinum pad comprises a plurality of platinum or platinum alloy discs of wire mesh or a single thick permeable member. An insulating wire screen is located at one or both sides of the pad.
