Process for synthesizing phenol directly from benzene

A process for synthesizing phenol from benzene in which a mixture of water and benzene is pressurized with oxygen, or an oxygen containing gas, at up to 170 DEG C., in the presence of copper metal and a compound which gradually dissolves the copper metal to form cupric sulphate. An example is provided.
