A cathode ray tube of the kind comprising at least two photo-cathodes comprises at least two separately manufactured sections each completely enclosing a volume bounded by the walls of the section in question, each of the sections housing a photo-cathode and no section containing within its volume more than one photo cathode. The separately manufactured sections are preferably closed at one end by a glass or like membrane having a photo-cathode formed on the inside, and may also have a phosphor deposited on the outside. A method of manufacturing an image intensifier camera tube of the image orthicon type includes the steps of separately manufacturing at least two sections 1, 12 each having one closure wall constituted by a glass or like membrane 2, 13, and each having a photo-cathode within it, fitting an envelope wall member 3 to the membrane end of one of the sections, mounting a temporary closure member 8 having an openable valve 9 over the far end of the envelope wall member, simultaneously exhausting the space between the closure member 8 and the membrane 2 and the section 1, fitting a second temporary closure member 18 over the membrane end of the other section 12 and exhausting the space between membrane 13 and member 18 and the section 12, bringing the two temporary closure members together, processing the photo cathodes when the spaces in which they are situated are in exhausted condition, opening by-pass valves 9, 26 and exhausting the spaces into assembly which are put into communication through the by-pass valves, sliding valves 8, 18 so that section 12 may be slid to bring membranes 2, 13 into contact, fixing the sections in their new relative positions and removing the temporary closure members.
