1,022,478. Testing shaft sealing rings. GOETZEWERKE FRIEDRICH GOETZE A.G. Nov. 20, 1963 [Nov. 20, 1962], No. 45874/63. Heading F2B. The radial resilience of the sealing lip 2 of a shaft sealing ring 3 is determined by measuring the axial force required to insert a conical member 1 a predetermined distance into the ring. The ring 3 is supported in a rotatably mounted cup 7 and the member 1 is carried by a rod 19 connected to pins pivoted on beams 4, 4SP1/SP journalled on pins fixed to a pillar 5. A counter-weight 24 is attached to the beams and a spring balance 9 is connected between a crossbar and a cord 21 which passes over a pulley 22 to a windlass 23 operated by a hand crank 10. In use, the member 1 is inserted into the ring 3 by operation of the crank 10 until a pointer 11 is on a given mark on a scale in the pillar 5 and the reading on the balance 9 is then a measure of the radial resilience of the lip 2. The cup may be rotated before the reading is taken and a number of such measurements may be made. The sealing lip may be lubricated with, for example, molybdenum disulphide, before a test is made. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), both the member 1 and the ring 3 are rotatably and axially movable.
