This report analyses these conditions and shows that such deformations can produce an equilibrium condition of the faces and that the thickness of the film gap can be adjusted by the degree of "pressure balancing" used. In addition, it is shown that normal operating conditions may give rise to an oscillatory behaviour of the film gap and that its frequency can be predicted. Fair agree¬ment with the experimental results has been obtained. It is concluded that if attempts to seal high pressures (i.e. 500 lb/sq. in or more), are made with conventional seal designs, it is unlikely that leakage rates will be acceptable and that modifications in the conventional design are required. A modified design recently proposed by B.H.R.A. is described.
