The invention comprises alkyl dinitrophenol esters of the formula:- FORM:0935398/IV(a)/1 wherein X represents a C9-12 alkyl radical and R represents a C3-4 alkyl radical. The compounds are prepared by reacting an alkyl dinitrophenol of the formula:- FORM:0935398/IV(a)/2 with an alkanoic acid chloride of the formula R.COCl, the reaction being preferably conducted in the presence of an acid binding agent in an organic solvent and at a temperature of between 30 DEG and 50 DEG C.
