The evolution of hydrogen in a mercury cathode electrolysis of brine is reduced by the addition of at least one alkali metal condensed phosphate other than pyrophosphate (e.g. sodium tripolyphosphate or sodium hexametaphosphate). The phosphate is added in amounts sufficient to dissolve any precipitate which is initially formed, for instance in amounts of 35-600 p.p.m. (calculated as P2O5).
