Ashless lubricating additives containing an oleophilic hydrocarbon chain and at least two polar groups and prepared by reacting a polyolefine which carries as substituents at least two succinic acid groups, succinic anhydride groups or succinic halide groups with an aliphatic amine which has at least one alkyl group of which at least one hydrogen atom has been replaced by an hydroxyl group, may be added to mineral or synthetic lubricating oils or to lubricating oils containing fatty oils or to lubricating greases. The amine preferably contains at least three hydroxyl groups and may be a primary, secondary or tertiary amine. In the examples lubricating additives (a) and (b) are tested in a gasoline engine and a diesel engine, the base oil being a paraffinic lubricating oil distillate of viscosity 11.5 cS. at 98.9 DEG C. in the diesel engine, and of the same type but of viscosity 7.2 cS. at 98.9 DEG C. in the gasoline engine. Additive (a) is obtained by treating a chlorinated ethylene-propylene rubber with maleic anhydride and then treating the product with tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane and additive (b) is obtained by treating an isobutene-isoprene rubber with maleic anhydride and then with tris-(hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane.ALSO:Ashless lubricating additives containing an oleophilic hydrocarbon chain and at least two polar groups are obtained by reacting a polyolefine which carries as substituents at least two succinic acid groups, succinic anhydride groups or succinic halide groups, with an aliphatic amine which has at least one alkyl group of which at least one hydrogen atom has been replaced by a hydroxyl group.
