Vinyl and other polymers are plasticized with C2- 21 carboxylic acid esters (e.g. acetates) of monomethyloldiphenylmethane and monomethylodibenzylbenzene, wherein each benzene nucleus may be substituted by one or more C1- 20 hydrocarbon radicals (e.g. methyl). The di- and tri-nuclear esters may be utilized in admixture with each other or with the analogous hydrocarbons in which the methylol acylate groups are absent. Examples describe polyvinyl chloride compositions containing also Ba fatty acid salt/Cd phenate stabilizer, stearic acid epoxidized soybean oil, CaCO3, TiO2. Polymers otherwise specified are polyvinyl acetate, polyvinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride/acetate copolymer, polyvinylbutyral, butyl rubber, styrene-butadiene rubber and natural rubber; cellulose acetate and ethyl cellulose.ALSO:Hydrocarbons of formula FORM:1103047/C4-C5/1 where n is 0-4 and R1 is a C1- 20 hydrocarbon radical (e.g. methyl), as well as the analogous tetranuclear compounds, may be isolated by fractional distillation of the mixtures (containing the corresponding methylol esters, see Division C2) which are formed by reacting CH2O with an aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. toluene) and an aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid in equimolar proportions at an elevated temperature in presence of an acidic catalyst (e.g. H2SO4).ALSO:The invention comprises esters with C2- 21 carboxylic acids of monomethyloldiphenylmethane and monomethyloldibenzyl benzene, wherein each benzene nucleus may be substituted by one or more C1- 20 hydrocarbon radicals. These compounds are prepared by reacting CH2O with a suitable aromatic hydrocarbon and an aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid in equimolar proportions at an elevated temperature in presence of an acidic catalyst (e.g. H2SO4). In practice, the products are obtained in admixture with the corresponding di- and tri-nuclear hydrocarbons, and the mixtures are separated by fractional distillation. In Examples 1 and 4, using paraformaldehyde, PhMe and HOAc, the product contains the above-described di- and tri-nuclear esters and hydrocarbons, as well as analogous tetra-nuclear compounds; in Example 5 the corresponding dinuclear isobutyrate and benzoate and the bis(dinuclear) adipate are said to be prepared (a) similarly, (b) by transesterification of the acetate, or (c) by hydrolysis of the acetate followed by direct esterification.
