A sign or indicator comprises a number of lengths of transparent or translucent material which at one end are positioned close to a light source and at the other ends form a number of zones of illumination which define symbols. Fig. 1 shows an indicator in which plates 1-4 of a translucent or transparent material such as the synthetic resins "Perspex" or " Diokon " (Registered Trade Marks) are illuminated at one end by electric lamps, and have their other ends held in slots of an opaque mask mounted in a fascia plate 6. By suitable selection of lamps a number of different symbols may be illuminated at the front plate. The plates may be covered with an opaque reflective coating and their front edge ground or roughed. As shown in Fig. 4, each plate may be split into sections which may be displaced and twisted relative to each other so as to define particular symbols at their front ends. As shown in Fig. 5, a single light source 15 in a reflective cavity 14 may illuminate selectively a number of plates 12 via a movable mask 16.
