1,016,986. Gaseous pressure engines. TOMKINS-JOHNSON CO. June 4, 1963 [July 9, 1962,] No. 22224/63. Headings F1M and F1S. In a gaseous pressure motor having a tubular cylinder 10, a piston 16 secured to a piston rod 18 extending through one of two heads 12, 14, a chamber 24 in communication with a port 22, a slidable spring-loaded valve 34 chamber having passages 40 which establish communication between the chamber and the cylinder at a first position and are closed at a second valve position, the piston moves the valve towards the second position as it approaches the head 12. Compressed air or gas is admitted through port 22SP1/SP into chamber 24SP1/SP and passes through ports 40SP1/SP into cylinder 10 causing piston 16 to move to the left. Air present in the cylinder 10 to the left of piston 16 is exhausted through ports 40 and 24 until the piston 16 engages valve 34 which is moved to the left against the action of spring 44. When ports 40 are closed by collar 26, the air is compressed between head 12 and piston 16 and bleeds through passage 60, past an adjustment screw 62 into chamber 40 thereby cushioning the piston motion until valve 34 bottoms against head 12. When compressed air is admitted through port 22, a spring-loaded valve 50 is unseated and air passes through passage 46, and groove 58 into cylinder 10 causing piston 16 to move to the right. When valve 34 moves to the right to uncover ports 40, valve 50 is reseated. At the other cylinder end passages 72, 74 and valve 76 function similarly to passage 46 groove 58 and valve 50, and a bleed passage (not shown) is provided in head 14. In a modification ports 40 are replaced by grooves on valve 34.
