A spinneret assembly for melt-spinning comprises a spinneret plate 10 having holes 28, Fig. 1 (not shown), and a distribution plate 12, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), attached to a filter block 14 by bolts 16. Filtered melt is discharged from filtration cavities 22 through holes 25, 26 into two branched channel systems 29, 30 in the upper face of distribution plate 12. The melt then flows through opposed slots 31, 32 located adjacent to the periphery of plate 12 into tapered cavities 34, 35. Each tapered cavity has its maximum depth at and is approximately coextensive in width with its associated slot. The slightly higher pressure drop across an outer hole 28 of the spinneret plate caused by the taper of the cavities 34, 35 compensates for the slightly lower temperature at the periphery of the plate and thereby reduces denier variations between individual filaments.
