High speed photography was used to measure fiber motion below a melt blowing die.The resultant data were then subjected to statistical analysis, and it was found that the fiber distribution at any plane is well-described with a biveariate normal distribution. This distribution produces an elliptical laydown pattern at the collection screen. Also, nerther of the two axes of the ellipse are parallel to the die slot axis-- i.e.,the elelipse axes are rotated at an angle relative to the axis of the die slots. This angle is a measure of the interdependence of fiber motion in orthogonal directions in a plane.
