Liquid-solid mixture to be separated is fed from a container 11, Fig. 2 (not shown), to another container 13 down a pipe 12 down a pipe 12 by lowering a valve 14, 15. A vessel 16 floats on the surface in container 13, and liquid is withdrawn from the liquid surface through perforations located in the base of vessel 16 near its outer periphery 18 by an annulus 19 of capillary material, (e.g. cotton wool arranged on wire mesh with spikes), which discharges the liquid into the lower central part of the vessel 16. From here it is fed by an overflow pipe 17 down a flexible pipe 31 to discharge. The depth of immersion of vessel 16 is governed by the position of the overflow pipe 17. When most of the liquid has been removed, sludge may be discharged from container 13 by raising valve 14, 15. In Fig. 3, (not shown), the side walls of container 13 consist of a foldable bellows, and liquid discharge is radially outwards. In Fig. 1, (not shown), the capillary material is draped over the raised edge of a trough containing the liquid solid mixture, and after separation the residual solids are removed by a pivoted scraper over the opposite edge. Effluents containing metal hydroxide may be treated.
