Pieces for use in learning to play chess are rectangular in shape and are marked on their top faces with all or part of a miniature chess board, together with a representation thereon of the basic moves of the piece and other information concerning the piece. Preferably the pieces are rectangular prisms and may be either hollow or solid. In the former case the pieces may contain conventional chessmen and may be identified by viewing the conventional chessmen through transparent side walls provided as part of the practice piece, and in the latter case the soled practice piece is identified by appropriate markings on its side faces. The sizes of the practice pieces may vary according to the conventional piece represented thereby. A board for use with the practice pieces may be marked with the starting positions of the various pieces.
