1,035,511. Radix converters. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION (OPERATING) Ltd. April 14, 1964 [Jan. 18, 1963], No. 2335/63. Heading G4A. In a radix converter, a matrix of modules each responsive to dividend and carry input signals and providing output signals representing the quotient and remainder when a number according to a first radix is divided by a second radix, the remainders from each repeated division represent the number according to the second radix. In a decimal/binary converter the decimal digits are fed in decreasing orders of significance to successive rows of modules (Fig. 1, not shown), a relay A, B or C being energized when a remainder is generated which controls the corresponding division process on the digit of next significance, until the final remainder outputs from the columns represent the binary equivalent. Modules 12, 13, 14, 15 are identical replaceable units. The remaining parts 16, 17 are degenerate forms of the modules and are each accommodated on a single board. In a binary/decimal converter, the binary number is first divided by two which only changes its significance and then is divided, according to the invention, by five using the circuit of Fig. 3 (not shown) as a module in the matrix. The modules may be electromagnetic relay circuits or transistorised circuits (Fig. 7, not shown).
