The invention comprises 1-aminoadamantane hydrate, its preparation by reacting the amine and at least 0.5 mole of water per mole of amine at a temperature above 70 DEG C., and a process for purifying crude 1-aminoadamantane by steam-distilling 1-aminoadamantane using at least half the equimolar amount of water and maintaining the condensing surfaces at a temperature sufficient to prevent blockage of the condenser by solid 1-aminoadamantane hydrate, and recovering 1-aminoadamantane from the distillate obtained, e.g. by extraction with methylene chloride. 1 - Amino - adamantane is prepared by subjecting 1-bromo-adamantane to the Ritter reaction with acetonitrile and sulphuric acid, reacting the product with an excess of water and subjecting the 1-acetamide-adamantane so obtained to alkaline hydrolysis.
