A chain guide having a cruciform arrangement of guide grooves for circular sectioned steel chains comprises cavities 2a, 4a in the grooves, which cavities diverge towards the chain inlet face of the guide, the cavities of opposed grooves being adapted to receive a chain link 7 transverse to the chain axis, whereupon the following link 8 abuts the face of the guide, and the link 7 is turned into its correct altitude by the leading link 6. The length of the cavities corresponds to the length of a link and the width of the divergent end of a pair of cavities is in excess of the length of a link.
