The invention comprises 2-(5-nitro-2-furfurylmercapto)pyridine-1-oxide, 2-(2-furfurylmercapto)pyridine-1-oxide, their acid addition salts, pharmaceutical compositions thereof and the preparation of the compounds by reaction of 5-nitrofurfuryl halide or furfuryl halide with 2-mercapto-pyridine-1-oxide, the product in free base form being converted into an acid-addition salt, if desired, by treatment with an acid. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the above compounds are effective against a variety of micro-organisms, and may be administered orally e.g. in the form of tablets, or topically, e.g. as ointments or powders.
