Words, e.g. Trade Marks, are recorded on data supports, e.g. punched cards, certain letters or combinations of letters occurring in the normal spelling of the words being replaced by other letters or combinations of letters. the supports being arranged in a logical order, e.g. alphabetical, derived from the transcribed spelling; and being used to control data processing apparatus, e.g. a tabulator, to record a list of the words, in the normal spelling, and in the above-mentioned logical order. The list may be arranged so that words having a similar pronunciation occur adjacent one another, regardless of their normal spelling.
