1,115,048. Arc blow-torches. GEBR. BOHLER & CO. A.G. 25 Aug., 1965 [4 Sept., 1964; 7 Sept., 1964], No. 36455/65. Heading H5H. An A.C. or D.C. plasma torch comprises a tube 3 closed at one end by an insulating plug 2 supporting an electrode rod 1 serving as a charge carrier source, there being no constriction of the plasma in the tube. The other end of the tube contains a tubular electrode 5 and gas is introduced tangentially or radially through a pipe 4. The electrodes, of thoriated tungsten, form the charge source. The tube may be of steel or of insulating material; alternatively it may act as an electrode with electrode 5 omitted. The torch is ignited with argon which is subsequently replaced with one or more of N 2 , CO 2 , methane, hydrogen and air. Focusing of the flame is achieved by varying either the arc current, the fluid flow rate or the nature of the fluid. Electric and magnetic fields may cause the arc to rotate.
