Iron is refined and heated by blowing into or on to the bath a stream of carbon dioxide - containing gas obtained by feeding a gaseous, liquid or solid fuel to the centre of a diffuser-type mixing chamber along the inner surface of which a stream of oxygen flows with a rotary movement. The resultant stream of gas may be oxidizing, reducing, as neutral in character.
