Pairs of opposed free pistons 3a, 3b, 5a, 5b, in cylinders 1, 2, are synchronized hydraulically by synchronizing pistons 15a, 15b, 16a, 16b, moving in cylinders filled with liquid, the chambers in the synchronizing cylinders being interconnected so that a chamber such as 19a which is expanding is connected by a pipe 24 to chamber 20b which is contracting. The piston rods 9a, 9b, 10a, 10b are connected to reciprocating hydraulic pumps 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b. A pump 26 feeds pressurized liquid through pipes 29 to valves 28 which are opened by the synchronizing pistons upon overtravel of the pistons to cause recentering thereof, escape valves 30 on opposite sides of the pistons being simultaneously opened by arms 32 on the piston rods. In a modification the valves 28, 30, are replaced by grooves in the piston rods.
