Thiolated products and method of crosslinking thiolated proteins and other thiolated polymers

A thiolated gelatine containing carbon is used as an ink. When dry, the paper is dipped into dimethylsulphoxide to cross-link the gelatine and render the writing waterproof.ALSO:A thiolated polymer such as a thiolated protein or a polysulphide thiol polymer is crosslinked by reaction with dimethyl sulphoxide. Thiolated gelatine hardened and rendered insoluble in this way may be employed in making capsules, medicated films or antiseptic dressings, for coating drugs, for photographic purposes in hot and/or humid climates, or for coating the hands so as to form gloves in situ thereon. A low molecular weight polysulphide polymer may be contacted with a dimethyl sulphoxide-toluene solution containing thiuram disulphide to produce a high molecular weight elastomer.ALSO:Vitamin A is encased in a gelatin layer by pan coating or by spraying a solution of thiolated gelatin in dimethyl sulphoxide thereon, followed by drying.ALSO:Thiolated gelatin cross-linked with dimethyl sulphoxide is used to coat drugs (e.g. Vitamin A), to make capsules and buccal lozenges to produce medicated films and wound dressings, to make prosthetic implants such as artificial arteries (by coating a fabric tube). Solutions of the gelatin may be applied to the skin to form gloves (e.g. for surgeons) or depilatory masks.
