The invention provides compounds of general formula FORM:1069952/C4-C5/1 in which A is a paraphenylene diamine or benzidine residue and Y is a nitro, amino or -NRR1 group in which R is an allyl or alkyl group of 1-12 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or R. The nitro compounds are prepared by reacting a para-nitrohalo-benzene with a paraphenylene diamine or benzidine derivative in a solvent in the presence of alkali and optionally in presence of copper powder. The amino compounds are prepared by reduction of the corresponding nitro compounds in a solvent, and may then be reacted with an allyl or alkyl halide or alkyl sulphate or alkyl arylsulphonate.ALSO:The invention provides N,N,N1,N1-tetrakis-(p - substituted - phenyl) - p - phenylene-diamines and benzidines of general formula FORM:1069952/C2/1 in which A is a paraphenylic diamine or benzidic residue, 1 is an -NH2 or -NRR1 group in which R is an allyl group or a straight or branched chain alkyl group of 1-12 carbon atoms, R1 is hydrogen or R and n is 1 or 2.
