In the method for the reduction of haze in beer described and claimed in Specification 981,715 a layered mineral having a grating or lattice capable of swelling is added to the beer before or after or simultaneously with the silica gel. Minerals mentioned: aluminium silicates and bleaching earths belonging to the montmorillonite group (in general); bentonite, calcium bentonite, beidellite, hectorite, illite, nontronite, sepiolite and vermiculite are specifically mentioned (certain of these are not montmorillonites). Strongly swelling layered minerals and minerals the swelling capacity of which has been reduced or destroyed by acid or by heat treatment (roasting at a temperature of 400 DEG -500 DEG C.) may be used. The addition to the beer may consist of up to 75% of the layered mineral with the remainder of silica gel and the silica gel may have been ground so finely that at least 90% has a grain size of not more than 40 microns. Comparative experiments disclose the treatment of beer with silica hydrate and small-pored silica gel.
