An apparatus for closing down a strip rolling mill includes tachometers TD1 and TD2, generating voltages E 1 and E 2 proportional to the speeds of a roller 1 and coiler 2, and a strip thickness gauge DM generating a voltage E 3 , the resulting current J 1 + J 2 + J 3 in the circuit being compared with a reference current J 4 , and the differential current being applied to a trigger device. At a preselected differential current value, transistors T 1 and T 2 cause a relay 3 to shut down the mill. Variable resistors R 1 -R 4 allow the characteristics of the circuit to be controlled.
