An artists easel adapted to be supported on a table comprises a front member formed by three spaced panels 1, 2, 3, two vertical bars 4, 5 slidably mounted in the spaces between the panels and carrying a top clamping bar 7 between which and a fixed bottom bar 8 a painting board (16) is clamped. The panels are secured to a batten 6 and an adjustable back member is pivoted to the batten 6 and is held in adjusted position by a sliding stay 12 and a thumbscrew 14. The vertical sliding bars are clamped in adjusted position by bolts 9 and washers 10 which overlap the adjacent panels 1, 2, 3. The top clamping bar 7 and the bottom bar 8 have abutments 17 which, when the painting board is reversed, prevent the painted surface from touching the panels. The bars 7, 8 may have two grooves for supporting two painting boards. A carrying handle 15 is secured to the batten 6.
