A fluid bearing has a bush 2 with series of arcuate recesses 3 therein, one series being adjacent one end and the other series being adjacent the other end of the bearing. Each recess 3 has a groove 4 positioned at the leading part thereof, relative to the direction of rotation indicated. The grooves 4 are not connected with the atmospheric environment. The bush 2 has, in addition to the recesses 3, an annular groove 5 at each end which serve to stabilize the shaft. The depth of the recesses is equal to the clearance between the bush 2 and a shaft 1 mounted therein.
