[Also in Division C3] Lubricating oils and fuels have added thereto an oil-soluble dispersing agent which is a copolymer of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, the copolymer having a main chain substantially free of mers of maleic or itaconic anhydride, to which chain are grafted mers comprising those of maleic and/or itaconic anhydride but substantially free of those of aliphatic mono-olefinic hydrocarbons, said anhydride mers being present in an amount from 1 to 10% by weight of the copolymer. Specified lubricating oils are spindle oils, gear oils, engine oils, hydraulic fluids, automatic transmission fluids and greases based on petroleum or mineral oils, and also synthetic lubricants such as oily esters, polyethers and silicone fluids. Fuel oils specified are gasoline, jet fuels, kerosene, furnace oil, burner oil and Diesel fuels. Other additives may also be present, such as antioxidants, stabilizers, viscosity index improvers, corrosion inhibitors and others; particular compounds listed are 4,4SP1/SP-methylene his - 2,6 - di - tbutylphenol, trialkyl - phenols, tris - (dimethylaminomethyl) phenol, phenothiazine, zinc, barium and nickel dialkyldithiophosphates, calcium, strontium and barium petroleum sulphonates, alkyl naphthalene sulphonates, alkyl phenates and salicylates, aluminium naphthenates, calcium phenyl stearates, alkaline earth salts of diphenolsulphides and alkylphenolformaldehyde condensates, tricresyl phosphate, chloroalkyl phosphates and phosphites, silicones, alkylphenolalkylene oxide condensates, alkyl succinic anhydride, sulphurized sperm oil, sulphurized terpenes, polyisobutylenespoly acrylic esters, and copolymers of unsaturated esters.
