1,194,181. Preparation of metanilic acid electrolytically. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 17 May, 1967 [24 May, 1966], No. 23070/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] An electrode for an electrochemical cell which may be used for cathodic reduction of mnitrobenzene sulphonic acid to metanilic acid comprises a bed of conducting and/or semiconducting particles and means whereby in operation the bed is fluidized, by upward passage therethrough of electrolyte, optionally containing one or more reactants. Fig. 1 shows a cell having a catholyte chamber formed by two flanged porous plastics tubes 1, 2 with a porous plastics plate 3 between them, above which lie the cathode particles, e.g. of copper powder, and round this an anolyte chamber formed by glass tube 5 lined with a lead anode 4, both chambers being closed by end plates 6, 7 through which pass catholyte and anolyte inlet and outlet tubes, a terminal 8 for the lead anode, a copper rod cathode conductor 9, and a reference electrode probe 14. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a single porous central tube houses the anode particles of, e.g. platinum, a surrounding glass tube contains the cathode particles of, e.g. copper, and both tubes have as base a single porous plastics plate, through which electrolyte is fed from a single chamber, cylindrical gauzes act as electrode conductors.
