Novel compounds of formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, mercaptoalkyl, alkylthioalkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkanoyl or cyano group, a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic group optionally hydroxy-substituted, or a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclylmethyl group, R1 and R2 are each a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group, and #1- dehydro, #6-dehydro and #1'6-bisdehydro derivatives thereof, are prepared by reacting the corresponding 16-unsubstituted-#16 compounds with a compound of formula RSH, and if desired introducing a #6-double bond if not already present and/or a #1-double bond into the product. Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for oral or parenteral administration comprise a compound of the above formula and a suitable carrier. The active ingredients possess endocrinological, progestational and contraceptive activity.
