[Also in Division E2] A flexural pivot device comprises two axially spaced tubular members 61, 62 on a common axis, each with an inner axially extending arcuate structure projecting into the other member and radially spaced therefrom, the structures being connected by crossed interfitting diametral flat springs, such that the members 61, 62 may rotate to a limited extent about the axis. The pivot is made by assembling four sleeve quadrants an opposite pair of which each having a longitudinal opening 39, and the two flat springs into a tubular crossed spring arrangement as in Fig. 8 which is bonded together. A reduced diameter semi-circular surface is made at 47 and 45 to give an overlap and an outer sleeve 53 is bonded at surfaces 48, 49; the ends of the assembly are cut off at X-X and the sleeve 53 is cut over the region of overlap of surfaces 45, 47 to form members 61, 62. The inner elements 63, 64 result from the cutting at openings 39 whose widths determine the limits of rotation members 61, 62. A double end supported flexural pivot is made similarly by using a central reduced diameter surface overlapped by two opposite outer such surfaces; two peripheral cuts are then made at the overlaps to allow the central portion to rotate while the outer ends are fixed. The bonding processes may be by brazing, or coating the surfaces to be joined with low-melting point solder or electro-depositing a suitable metal; epoxy resin cement is sometimes used. The diameter of the pivot may be from one eighth of an inch to three inches. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 915,918.
