In a method of transporting, storing and handling inflammable materials there is added a predetermined quantity of dichlorofluorobromomethane to the inflammable material to reduce or prevent the risk of fire or explosion in a medium such as air or oxygen. Materials treated include petrol, fuel oil, sulphur compounds, hydrogen and aromatic aliphatic or heterocyclic hydrocarbons. When the inflammable material to be treated is gaseous or vaporous the dichlorofluorobromomethane may be added thereto as a vapour and the mixture so obtained may be condensed by compression. When the inflammable material is a liquid or solid the dichlorofluorobromomethane may be added thereto as a vapour or a liquid. In an example a minimum of 48.2% and a maximum of 51.8% dichlorofluorobromomethane was added to hydrogen.
