Class 39(4) In a thermonuclear reactor comprising means for establishing in a low pressure region a cylindrical layer of rotating relativistic electrons is an axially symmetric magnetic field to provide a closed electromagnetic field pattern for confining a plasma, a pair of coils are disposed outwardly from the end regions of the closed field pattern to balance the axially directed pressure exerted by the plasma. In Fig. 1 the reactor comprises a vacuum vessel 12 surrounded by coils 13 and provided with internal coils 16, 17, 18, 21 which allow high energy electrons injected into the vessel to be formed into a cylindrical layer 19. At each end of the vessel are provided coils 22, 23 which are preferably enclosed in jackets to allow coolant to circulate through them and which follow the contours of the magnetic field.
