1,163,204. Laminates. PIRELLI S.p.A. 28 Feb., 1967 [16 March, 1966], No. 9403/67. Heading B5N. A method of manufacturing a composite structure for use as a seat covering, covered upholstery, or other outer covering, and comprising a covering layer consisting of or containing a polyvinyl chloride resin and a layer of flexible expanded polyurethane resin material, comprises the steps of mixing a filler consisting of at least one polymer or copolymer of a vinyl compound in the form of a plastisol or a plasticized powder, with the polyether or polyester component of the polyurethane resin material, reacting the mixture with an isocyanic compound in the presence of a catalyst, a stabilizer for the expanded resin material and a blowing agent, allowing the polyurethane resin material so formed to expand to form a layer, covering the expanded layer so formed with the covering layer, and joining the layers by high-frequency welding. As described, the covering layer is of P.V.C. sheet or a fabric coated with P.V.C. resin, and the polyurethane material contains 5-70% preferably 50-70% by weight of the filler. A fabric, which may be vinyl resin coated, or a polyethylene sheet, may be adhered by the high-frequency welding to the opposite face of the polyurethane material to the covering layer. Of the materials used in the polyurethane foam mixture the polyester may be a condensation product of an aliphatic or aromatic acid with a glycol or polyol, the polyether may be a polyhydroxyl compound, e.g. a polyethylene-polypropylene glycol or polypropylene glycol type condensation product, or a condensation product of a triol, e.g. glycerol or trimethylolpropane with propylene glycol, or a condensation product of an amino derivative, e.g. ethylene-diamine, with propylene oxide; the isocyanic compound may be a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate; the catalyst may be a tertiary amine, or a tin compound, e.g. the ethyl hexoate; the stabilizer may be a silicone compound, and the blowing agent may be water containing if desired methylene chloride. The filler may be P.V.C., vinyl acetate-vinyl chloride copolymer, vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer, or an acrylonitrile polymer or copolymer, and may be obtained by emulsion or suspension polymerization.
