In an installation for the composting of organic waste, Fig. 1, of the type in which the materials are spread on superimposed floors as at 2, 3 and are turned by ploughshares 6 moving about an axis 4, the materials being swept from the centre to the periphery and vice versÔ on alternate floors and falling from floor to floor, the ploughs are periodically temporarily reversed to prevent build-up of materials on their leading faces. A plough for use in such an installation, Fig. 2, comprises a depending trailing stem 6 having a transverse foot with a front clearing surface 1011 and a rear clearing surface 101; the front clearing surface is convex about a centre lying below the floor surface.
