Ferro-magnetic (e. g. steel) wire is treated by immersing it in fanned coils in molten lead and moving the coils through the lead or a conveyer while magnetically holding the wire beneath the lead surface in which it is buoyant. The conveyer may be an endless belt of a mesh or parallel chains or cables with electromagnets arranged below the upper section thereof.
