A process for converting polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbonaceous feedstock to gasoline by hydrocracking, wherein the feedstock is contacted with molten zinc halide salt in the presence of hydrogen in a hydrocracking zone at elevated temperature and pressure to effect hydrocracking of the feedstock, comprises maintaining a mixture of zinc halide salt and zinc oxide in the hydrocracking zone. Preferably, the mole ratio of halide to oxide is at least 10:1. In an example, a coal extract is hydrocracked over a ZnCl2/ZnO catalyst.
