A V.T.O.L. aircraft control column comprises a shaft parallel to the aircraft longitudinal axis, and movable axially to control the direction of engine thrust, and rotatable about its axis to control the magnitude of the thrust. As described, the aircraft has a single engine with four rotatable nozzles 5-8. Axial movement of the shaft 35 is transmitted through control rods 33, 31, servomotor 32 and rack-and-pinion and bevel gearing 30, 26, 27 to rotate the nozzles, and rotary movement of the shaft is transmitted through a rotary member 55 splined to the shaft 35 so that it does not slide axially with the latter, and through control rods 38 and a servomotor 40 to an engine fuel control 4. Alternatively electric control transmission can be used. The shaft 35 is biased to a central position, axially and rotationally, by springs, and has a handle extending at right-angles to it which is horizontal in the central position. The control is arranged so that forward movement of the shaft produces forward movement of the aircraft, and upward movement of the handle increases the thrust. The invention is also applicable to aircraft with pivotable airscrews and pivotable jet engines.
