In an electron impact ion source for a mass spectrometer a sample vaporization cell 4 is located in a recess 5 in the ionization block 2 and is thermally insulated, windows 4b and 2b providing communication between the vaporization chamber 4a and the ionization chamber 3. The vaporization cell has a heater 7 and a cooling jacket 6 and contains a heater coil 8 into which a vessel 8 carrying a sample is introduced. The vessel 8 is pushed forward by a magnetically operated plunger 16 from a magazine 11 and the magazine can be displaced for the introduction of a different sample vessel 8 by means of a valve piston 14. Each vessel 8 has a magnet 17 for holding the vessel at the end of the plunger 16.
