[Also in Division H2] Equipment on a trawler for controlling the winding in and paying out of trawl net ropes 22 comprises an electric winch drive motor 4 having its torque varied according to the amount of rope 22 payed out from the drums 1 between predetermined minimum and maximum amounts, the trawler drive being stopped when said maximum pay out is exceeded. A screw 12 turning in synchronism with the drums 1 causes a slide 21 to move therealong, representing the length of rope passing from or on to each drum. Trip switches 23, 24 are set to be operated by the slide 21 at said maximum and minimum pay out values and casue a variation in torque at the motor 4, via a variable ratio transformer 6. The motor torque is increased if the maximum pay out switch 23 is actuated and decreased if the minimum pay out switch 24 is actuated, the trawler drive switch 25 being actuated if the motor torque due to operation of switch 23 is insufficient to overcome the pull on the rope 22. The winch may be driven or regulated by mechanical hydraulic or pneumatic means instead of the electrical means described.
