A rubber-like ring which hermetically seals a can lid to a can and has tabs for pulling the lid off, is applied to the can 33 (Fig. 9) by a member 40 which pushes the ring 6 off an expanded mandrel 5a, 5b. The ring is placed on the mandrel, while the latter is collapsed, by a finger 18 (Fig. 4) which, in the constructions illustrated, first strips the top ring 11 from a column of joined rings fed upwardly on a mandrel 13. The fingers 18 may be mounted on a horizontal disc II (Fig. 1) to deliver rings from either of two storage mandrels, one of which may be filled while the other is in use, to a series of ring-applying mandrels 5 carried on a rotating disc 4. Cans are fed into position above the mandrels by a star-wheel IV and are held down by one or more spring-biased overhead tracks 135 while the rings are stripped from the mandrels 5. The column of joined rings 10 (Fig. 4) is fed upwardly on the mandrel 13 by a platform (80) (Fig. 7, not shown) driven through springs 81 from a screw drive 16, 17. Endless bands (84) forming the surface of the mandrel may be free or may be driven from the drive for the ring platform. Pawls (90), (91) (Fig. 6, not shown) may ensure that the rings are pulled singly from the mandrel. The sealing rings may be pulled from the fingers 18 by the mandrels 5 (Fig. 1) which may either overtake the fingers, or may move in the opposite direction. Alternatively, the rings may fall from the fingers on to an intermediate support (115) (Fig. 8, not shown) from which they are removed by the passage of the mandrels. The fingers 18 may be pivoted for retraction during part of their path of movement. Parts of the ring-applying mandrel and of the storage mandrel, and the positions of the bars 135 holding down the cans, may be replaced or adjusted to permit use with containers of different sizes and shapes.
